Algeria is Africa's second largest country and boasts an incredibly picturesque landscape and natural beauty of all shades, heights and climates. While the Mediterranean coastline is largely lined by the picturesque cliffs of the coastal mountains of the Little Atlas that are often covered in snow, the southern part of the country extends deep into the Sahara. To make the overall picture even more dramatic you may be interested to know that the north-eastern regions of Algeria resemble landscapes of Central Europe. The natural heritage is complemented by the spiritual legacy of historical epochs represented by UNESCO listed monuments like Tipaza, Timgad, Jamil, Tassili National Park, Mzab Valley, Beni Hammad Fort or Medina in the capital.

frequently asked questions
The climate of the northern seaside is typically Mediterranean and subtropical with regular rainfall during the winter, which in the high altitudes of the Northern Little Atlas causes a rich snowfall that benefits rare cedar trees and cork forests.
The seascape with numerous steep slopes into the sea is transformed into fertile plateaus with very pleasant temperatures even in the summer months. In this climate zone you may see great valleys with beautiful waterfalls (Sétif), stalactite caves (Tlemcen) and thermal springs (Guelma).
The large Sahara Atlas in the south, on the other hand, is bordered by the Sahara which occupies 4/5 of the size of Algeria. Large sandy areas are exposed to extreme drought conditions. It may not rain there for several years and temperatures between day and night fluctuate significantly. In order to prevent the Sahara from advancing "belts" of greenery are planted in the Sahara Atlas region to protect mainly the fertile plateau.
The most pleasant months to visit all of these areas are October and November when temperatures are nicely warm and the sky is clear. The same applies to March, April and May although in April it is necessary to count on sandstorms and ocassional coastal rains. Tassili has the most favorable conditions for visiting from November to April however at night the temperatures are very low and you need to have some warm clothes with you.
The following table shows the average daily air temperatures in the capital of Algeria:
January | February | March | April | May | June | July | August | September | October | November | December | |

Algeria is located on the Mediterranean coast of Africa. With a total area of 2 381 741 km2 it is the largest country in the so-called Mashreq region. It is surrounded by six other countries - namely Morocco, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Libya and Tunisia. Despite the large area vast majority of cities and activities are concentrated in the northern part along the sea coast where we can find the capital city Algiers. The country's northen areas are atypically green for the Arab world while the rest of the country is characterized by deserts and semi-deserts. If you decide to travel to Algeria then you can expect flight time of about 7 hours including transfers.
